Community

We want to help make our local communities fantastic places to live. While our primary focus is doing this by offering great sport and active recreation opportunities, we also know partnering with other local incorporated societies and charities who do amazing work maximises our impact and improves our communities.

Our community initiatives & support

Kids & Whanau Drop In

We partnered with Waimea Rural Connections to bring fun activities to kids in our communities on Fridays every fortnight.

Helping to revitalise community facilities

Community facilities in Brightwater (outside of the Wanderers facilities) have been underutilised and developments have not kept up with changing demands of our residents.

We are helping local groups and TDC to improve accessibility to these facilities and also working with TDC and the Brightwater community to renovate the hall so it becomes an asset to the community again. Watch this space!

Bringing basketball to Brightwater

We had to do something to restore our underutilised court area. After considering several options, we decided to install a full-size FIBA regulation basketball court.

As always, inclusivity was a major focus. Basketball requires very little to play - just a ball. You can play by yourself or with friends and family. The hoops can also be lowered on request for young children and wheelchair basketball.

Matariki Event

We assist in the organisation and hosting of the communities Matariki event.

The event truly brings the community together with 7 groups involved in its organisation.

Brightwater Group Fitness

We provide our gym at a 'community rate' for the Brightwater Group Fitness ladies. Since 2015 they run fantastic classes to get local ladies fitter, healthier and stronger.

It is based around school drop off times specifically to reduce barriers for mums to take part.

Waimea Rural Connections: Kai & Catch Up

Waimea Rural Connections utilises our venue for their Kai and Catch Up events. Essentially, they provide a free dinner for those in the primary industries. What this does is get them into a social environment and out of work environments where they often work alone.

We're happy to help by providing some sports gear for kids to enjoy and assisting with the meals and refreshments.

The Community Gym

The old bowls clubrooms were adopted by the Wanderers Sports Club following the demise of bowls and beach volleyball in Brightwater.

Seeing the opportunity, we have turned this into a community gym open to all (not just our sporting members). It is now thriving with over 100 community members.

Carols in the Park

Every Christmas the club organises Carols in the Park in Brightwater.

The event features carols (obviously), a santa appearance, lolly scrambles, a bouncy castle, face painting and more.

Facility projects

We often work with other groups to improve our facilities and ensure they are safe for the community.

The most recent example is the retaining wall / seating next to the cricket nets. The old one had nails poking out and was generally run down. Through Council and the Brightwater Domain Board we managed to make this a safe and useful resource again.

ANZAC Service

The Brightwater Community Association leads the organisation of these events.

We're happy to be a helping hand doing some of the odd jobs like designing and printing booklets, reading the roll of honour, helping in the kitchen and setting up.

NZCT Senior Mobility Sessions

Working with Age Concern, we started running Senior Mobility Classes to reduce the risk of falls in the elderly and increase their independence.

We have been delighted to see the major improvements in participants and the growth in popularity of this programme.
