Rugby

The Wanderers Sports Club was founded in 1951 as a rugby club when the Rovers and Pirates merged. Since, we have grown to become a formidable club in the region with many junior and senior teams wearing the blue and gold hoops every winter.

Registering will look different this year as NZ Rugby has decided to move to a new system. We've provided some instructions below if you need a helping hand.

Instructions for registering on the new Xplorer System

New Zealand Rugby has moved to a new system so registering yourself and/or your kids will look different this year. As always, we’re here to help and have put together some step-by-step instructions to follow. If you are struggling, please contact jimmy@wandererssports.co.nz.

Step One: Create your account

Head to Rugby Xplorer.
Click ‘create a rugby xplorer account’
Make sure New Zealand Rugby is selected at the top of the form.
Complete the form with details of the parent, not the child.
Once complete, you will be able to login to Rugby Xplorer.

Step Two: Link children to your account

Note: Senior players skip to step 3. This is mostly used by parents/guardians wanting to link children to their profile.

Follow this link.
Login and click ‘link a new person’
Complete their details in the pop-up box.
When finished, you will be able to register your child to Wanderers.

Step Three: Register to the club

Follow this link.
Login, if you need to, otherwise select the profile you would like to register and click ‘next’.
You will be asked to select a 'registration type' at the beginning of the process. Junior Contact is for Under 8 and up (tackle rugby), Junior non-contact is for Under 6 and Under 7 (rippa rugby).
Complete the form in full.

Important - clarifying payment options:

When it comes to making a payment, you have two options. Pay online or be invoiced. Unfortunately, this is not very clear on the form.

If you want to be invoiced, click the checkbox that says ‘your club provides you with the option of making payment directly to you club. If this checkbox is selected, you will need to contact your club for further information.’ Then select ‘pay’. This will complete your registration and your card will not be charged. In time, the club will send you an invoice.
If you wish to pay online, leave the checkbox unchecked and select pay. You will be prompted to complete payment.

Family Discounts

Rugby Xplorer does not support the family discount we offer (maximum payment of $140 for children in the same family) so we have had to do a workaround.

If you have two or more children, please register as explained above and select to be invoiced. We will charge a maximum of $140 to the same family for their children.

Junior & youth rugby information (Primary & intermediate)

Start and finish dates

The junior rugby season typically runs from late April or early May to mid-late August (school terms 2 and 3). Games are not played during the school holidays.

Grades

We have teams in all grades from Under 6 to Under 13.

Under 6 and 7 play 'rippa rugby', a non-contact form of rugby. Tackle rugby commences from Under 8.

Uniform

For games, players must wear:

Shorts
Socks
Playing jersey
Rugby boots

Shorts and socks can be purchased through the club here. Playing jerseys are provided to teams for the season.

Registrations

The earlier you register, the better we can organise your season.

Youth / Age Grade Information (College)

Start and finish dates

There has been a lot of change in recent years with these grades. However, in 2025 it has been decided that U14-U16 will play for their clubs on Saturdays. We expect the season to align with school terms 2 and 3.

Grades

Wanderers will offer teams in U14, U15 and U16 in 2025.

Golden Oldies rugby

The Golden Oldies Pirates are a Wanderers affiliated group who participate in a few tournaments each year. It's as much about the off field as the on field for the Over 35's.

Membership fees are set at just $25 each season.
