Cricket

Cricket came under the Wanderers banner in 1982. We have since grown to be one of the largest Nelson based clubs known for a strong emphasis on junior cricket and youth development and a proud history of success in senior men's cricket (we are the only club from Nelson to have won the National Club Championship in 2000).

Junior Cricket Information (Primary & Intermediate)

Start and Finish Dates

Junior cricket will begin on the weekend after Labour weekend (end of October) and run until late March. There will be a break in the season during the summer school holidays.

Grades

Softball

Typically, cricket played with a softball is well suited to kids in school years 1 to 5.  Games run for approximately 1 hour.

Hardball

Cricket with a hardball can be played by children in school years 3 and up. We enter teams into the beginner and advanced Primary and Intermediate grades. Games run for approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.

There is a lot of flexibility. For example, if parents decide their child is not quite ready for hardball at school year 3 to 5 then we welcome them to continue playing with a softball. If parents want to bring kids up into hardball cricket earlier, that is also okay in many cases (although we strongly recommend waiting until school year 4 at minimum).

Unform

Kids playing softball must wear:

Kids playing in the hardball grades must wear:

The club will provide team shirts for all teams for the season. Club caps are available to purchase

Equipment

All softball equipment is provided by the club. Kids can choose to use their own bats if they wish.

A gear bag will be provided to all teams with all required equipment so parents are not required to purchase anything. We do recommend hardball players have their own helmet and box for safety and hygiene reasons. If you know your child will stick with cricket, we recommend purchasing equipment which is suited to their particular size and preference to maximise their enjoyment.

Registrations

The earlier registrations come in, the better we can organise your season.
